GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.

The GEAR UP goal is to encourage and prepare students to stay in school, set high academic expectations, study hard, take the courses needed for higher education and continue their education after high school either at a community college, four year college or trade school.

GEAR UP began in 1999 as a five year federal grant with a focus on 7th graders. Since that time the grant was extended to six years and the original 7th grade cohort will graduate as the grant comes to an end in 2005.

Even though GEAR UP started out by focusing and following one group of students, the entire school is a GEAR UP school.

All students benefit from the GEAR UP programs and can participate in GEAR UP Events.
