The Lame Deer School District was founded in 1909 and is located within the exterior boundaries of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.

There are nine buildings which house the various schools, administration, and support departments. Five of these buildings are used for classrooms and student activities. The remaining four are used for transportation, maintenance, shipping and receiving, administration, technology support, and the parenting center.

As of October 1, 2004, approximately five-hundred K-12 students are enrolled at Lame Deer Schools. Teaching and supporting these students are sixty certified teachers, thirty-four support staff providing janitorial, transportation, secretarial, counseling, and teacher aide services, and six administrators at the various schools and departments.

Both the elementary and junior high schools are located in Lame Deer. The high school is located two miles south of Lame Deer off Highway 39.

A Little Bit of History

Public schooling was originally established in Lame Deer in 1909.

Information on the history of our school district has been difficult to track down, however; Mrs. Mabel Small and Mr. George Birtic have put together the following history:

1940’s – Lame Deer School District consisted of two buildings for grades K-8. The school buildings were located in the vicinity of the parking lot of the Allen Rowland Gym. A log cabin, located where tribal forestry is housed, served as the administration building and the cafeteria.

1950’s – A cafeteria was added in the basement of the larger of the two school buildings. In the mid 1950’s the elementary school was built and consisted of the north and south wings, the office area, and a library. These areas are still in use today.

1960’s – Teacher housing was built in the area where the present administration and junior high buildings are located. There was also a small trailer court which provided teacher housing.

1970’s – In the early 1970’s the current library was utilized as a gym, cafeteria and auditorium. The superintendent served as school principal. It wasn’t until the mid 1970’s, as the school population grew, that a principal for the schools was hired. During this time the east wing was added on to the elementary buildings. In the late 1970’s the cafeteria was built as well.

1980’s - In 1984, the Allen Rowland gymnasium and classrooms were finished and put to use as the Lame Deer Junior High. The project was funded through the Coal Board.

1990’s – After much lobbying and hard work, the Lame Deer High School was established in 1995. The school was housed in temporary modular buildings.

In January of 2000, the new high school was opened and the junior was moved to the former high school.

2000 – During the 2002-2003 school years, the Lame Deer Alternative Learning Center was established.

2004-  The former LDALC building is utilized to host the Lame Deer School District Parent Center and the Technology Department.

2005 - Lame Deer Junior High is closed due to mold infestation found in the modular buildings that housed our junior high students and staff.  Junior High students and staff will be attending classes at Lame Deer High School.

2006 - 2007 - Jr. High students begin their first year in attendance at Lame Deer High School.  Accelerated Biometrics is introduced in place of lunch tickets for student and staff lunch tracking

A fuel station for district vehicles was built in the location where the Junior High once occupied.

2007 -2008 Classroom additions are added at the Sr./Jr. High School to accommodate the growing student population.
